Press Start: How Carrollton Got Its First Esports Center

Building a home for the next generation of players at the Carrollton Recreation Center

A First for the City

On January 22, 2023, a new kind of room opened inside the Carrollton Recreation Center. It was not a basketball court. It was not a fitness studio. It was Carrollton’s very first esports center.

Dallas Media Company LLC & Starlight Production was proud to help pioneer it. The goal was simple. We wanted to build a dedicated space where kids could play and enjoy video games together.

For a lot of cities, that idea still sounds new. For Carrollton, it became real.

Why a Gaming Space Matters

Gaming is no longer something kids do alone in a bedroom. It is a team sport. It is a creative outlet. For many young people, it is the first place they feel like they belong.

An esports center turns that energy into something bigger. Kids learn to communicate. They practice teamwork. They figure out how to win with grace and lose without giving up.

A dedicated space also keeps the experience safe and social. Instead of scattering across screens at home, kids gather in one room. They sit shoulder to shoulder. They cheer each other on.

That is the kind of community we set out to build.

Built for the Next Generation

The center was designed with young players in mind. The setup is approachable. The vibe is welcoming. No one needs a high-end rig at home to take part.

We did not cut corners on the build. The space was outfitted with tournament-ready gear from top to bottom.

The main floor: 20 professional-grade gaming stations

Each station was built to compete. The specs include:

  • PC build: Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU, NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPU, 16 GB DDR4 3600MHz RAM
  • Display: 27″ MSI gaming monitor — 165Hz, 1080p, 1ms response time
  • Mouse: Razer DeathAdder
  • Keyboard: Razer Huntsman TE
  • Mouse pad: Razer XXL
  • Headset: Razer BlackShark V2 Tournament
  • Seating: Razer gaming chair

The console lounge

Not every session has to be PC-first. A relaxed console area rounds out the room:

  • Two 55″ TVs and one 65″ TV
  • Two Nintendo Switch 2 systems
  • An Oculus Quest 2 VR headset

We wanted every kid who walked in to feel like the space was theirs. Beginners and veterans both have a seat at the table.

Looking Ahead

The Carrollton esports center was a first. We do not think it will be the last.

Spaces like this give young people a place to grow. They open the door to friendships, skills, and maybe even future careers. Every great player and creator starts somewhere. We are glad Carrollton now has a place where that journey can begin.
