Artist Spotlight: Terri Goidel Silver at Art in the Arena Frisco

Dallas Media Company caught up with artist Terri Goidel Silver at Art in the Arena Frisco, held inside the Dallas Stars’ Comerica Center. She walked us through her process, her inspiration, and the story behind one of her most personal…

A Lifetime of Painting

Terri has been painting for most of her life. She works across watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics, and pastels. Watercolor is her favorite. She likes how the colors blend.

Her process depends on the medium. For pen and ink pieces, she starts with a pencil drawing. Then she does a light pen pass. Then watercolor. Then she goes back over it with pen again. That’s a four step process. For a standard watercolor piece, it’s simpler: pencil first, then watercolor on top.

Painting How She Feels

Terri paints based on mood and inspiration. If she’s craving a trip to the beach, she’ll paint a beach scene instead. She takes photos everywhere she travels, then brings them home to paint later since there’s rarely time to sit and paint on location.

From Fashion Design to Fine Art

One of Terri’s standout pieces has an unexpected origin. Before she was a full-time artist, she worked as a fashion designer. She had an old portfolio of illustrated women in pristine condition and wanted to give it new life.

She painted a 36 by 36 inch acrylic background, added more color to the original fashion illustrations, cut the figures out, and adhered them to the canvas. A final layer of varnish locked everything in place. The result blends her fashion design past with her fine art present.
