Above the Net: Sports Photography for the Elite Sports Association Throwball Tournament

The Opportunity

Throwball moves fast. The ball never touches the floor on a live point, it’s caught and thrown above a net set higher than the players’ reach, which means the decisive moment of every rally happens in the air, in under a second. For a tournament photographer, that’s the whole challenge: peak action lives at the net, and there’s no second take.

The Elite Sports Association brought together 24 teams in Plano for a full day of competition, and they wanted more than a few snapshots. They wanted the moments that matter to the people who played — the winning point, the block at the net, the bench reaction — plus a clean, organized group portrait for every team to keep and share.

That’s a coverage problem, not a shoot-and-go job. Dozens of teams cycling through matches across a tight schedule, families and supporters in the stands, and a hard expectation that everyone walks away represented. Elite Sports Association needed a media partner who could read a fast court, work efficiently between matches, and turn it all around while the energy was still high.

The Approach

Dallas Media Company came in with a sports background built on capturing fast, unpredictable action — years of esports and live-event production where the key moment never waits for you. Throwball rewards the same instincts: anticipate the play, hold position at the net, and trust your timing.

Read the court, own the net. We positioned for the moments that define the sport — the catch at full extension, the throw across the net, the defensive scramble. Tight, clean frames that put the viewer inside the point rather than watching from the back row.

Cover every team, not just the finalists. A community tournament is for everyone in it. We worked the full bracket so that teams knocked out early were documented with the same care as the teams lifting the trophy.

Build group photos into the run of show. Team portraits are easy to botch in the chaos of a tournament day. We organized per-team group shots between matches — consistent framing, consistent quality — so every roster had a portrait worth printing and posting.
