At Dallas Media Company, some of our favorite work happens when the pressure of a client deadline is off the table. Creativity gets to lead instead. That’s exactly what this recent collaborative photo meetup was about. It was a chance to get in a room with talented models, photographers, and artists. We threw out a few lighting setups and saw what we could build together.
The Collaboration
This shoot brought together a tight, talented crew. Model Briana Langston brought a presence in front of the camera that made every setup feel effortless. Makeup artistry came from Mercedes Rangel Makeup. Her work gave every look the kind of polish and dimension you need for a shot to read as “magazine cover” rather than “just a nice photo.”
The shoot took place at Ed Zabel Photography Studio, 1345 E Levee St, Dallas, TX 75207. The space gave us the room and the equipment to move fast between setups without losing momentum.
Collaborative meetups like this one are a staple of the Dallas creative community. They’re one of the best ways for photographers, models, MUAs, and stylists to push each other’s work forward outside of a typical paid production. Everyone shows up to experiment. Everyone trades ideas. Everyone leaves with images that raise the bar on their portfolio.
Experimenting With Light
The real focus of the day was lighting. Rather than settling into one setup and shooting it out, we treated the session as a working lab. We moved through different lighting styles to see how each one shaped Briana’s features. We watched how each one played off Mercedes’ makeup work. We tracked how each one changed the overall mood of the frame.
A few things we were chasing:
- Contrast and shadow to add drama and give the images that editorial, high-fashion edge
- Soft, even light to keep skin tones clean and let the makeup detail shine through
- Color and gel work to introduce mood and make certain frames feel more like a fashion campaign than a straightforward portrait
Switching setups mid-shoot isn’t just a technical exercise. It’s how you figure out which light actually serves the story you’re trying to tell. Every change in angle, modifier, or color temperature gave us a completely different photo. The model stayed the same. The makeup stayed the same. The set stayed the same. Only the light changed, and that was the point.
The Result: Magazine-Worthy Imagery
What came out of the session was a set of images that feel like they belong on an editorial spread. They’re polished. They’re intentional. They’re full of mood. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to on every shoot, whether it’s a branded campaign for a client or a passion-project collaboration like this one.
